It truly says something when you choose this month’s review to be on revolts. New Year, new resolutions I suppose. Only have to look at the world around you to realise the need for change has become dire. Terry Deary must certainly have come to the realisation when he decided to release his book, Revolting; a simplified historical book looking at the world’s most memorable and unmemorable revolts through the comedic lens.
I have to say reading Deary again does bring back some nostalgia especially if you were a fan of Horrible Histories.
Despite what my high school scores will say I do like history. At least the parts that match my interests. And are explained in a way that my brain can better comprehend. Yay for dyslexia!
If you’re worried Revolting will bog you down with the details don’t be. Deary’s Revolting is an easy read. Though I would recommend not reading it in a busy environment if you’re easily distracted by background noises. His dry wit and dark humour is an additional bonus. But I wouldn’t have expected anything less from the man. He knows how to keep history fun while at the same time point out the world’s menial problems. Really gets the blood pumping and the thoughts rolling when you’re reminded what your taxes are really used for. And that’s what Revolting does, awakens the inner anarchist in you. So don’t delay. Get to reading and planning. Before Starmer takes a page from Trump’s books. Laugh and rage about society before the definition of ‘freedom’ is redefined forever.
